Blacklight yoga class at Spirit Yoga
Blacklight yoga class at Spirit Yoga

Last weekend I went to a blacklight yoga class in Pacific Beach at Spirit Yoga. Think glow sticks, body paint and stickers paired with your neon workout gear in a dark studio under blacklight. It was like a 90s rave but getting high with transcendental vinyasas instead of ecstasy. The music was awesome—high-energy rap and other popular hits—and the instructor team was great (hands-on adjustments, yay). I caught myself smiling through much of the class because there were such a fun vibe in the room – at one point we were volleying an illuminated balloon to one another. But make no mistake, it was still a challenging workout. It seemed like we did a lot of balancing and inversions, so my arms felt it the next day. My favorite part of class was when we all (unprompted) sang along to “You’ve Lost That Loving Feeling” during savasana. The studio holds a blacklight yoga class one Saturday evening per month, and since it’s their most popular class, you’d be well advised to register ahead of time.

I also ventured out to the beach to dine at Firehouse American Eatery + Lounge, which is just a few steps from the ocean on Grand Avenue. The Firehouse recently got a new chef from their sister restaurant in Little Italy, Kettner Exchange. Chef Brian Redzikowski is now overseeing both restaurants, and has brought an elevated menu to the beachy-casual eatery also known for its lively nightlife. Some of my favorite menu items are the kale salad, crispy Brussels sprouts, blistered shishito peppers, and the handmade pappardelle pasta. If you’re in the mood for bar food, go for the corn dogs or mini Chicago dogs. I love the refreshing PB Collins cocktail that has vodka, St. Germain, strawberries, soda water and lemon. When you’re finished with dinner, be sure to head upstairs to sit by the fire pit tables and look out toward the ocean. There’s another bar upstairs in case you down that first PB Collins as quickly as I did…
