We’ve all heard the expression “a way to a man’s heart is through his stomach,” and, well, mine too. Just in time for Valentine’s Day, I took a chocolate-making class at Sweet Petite Confections in Clairemont. They offer monthly classes for 10-12 people that last about two hours. During the class we made a sheet of chocolate bark and a tray of filled bonbons. The class determines ahead of time whether to use dark or milk chocolate (we chose milk), but most groups go with dark. Owner Michelle Lomelin used to work in the fashion industry, so she channels that same creativity and design into chocolate now. She provided chocolate transfer sheets with fun designs (think animal and geometric prints) so we could personalize our creations, a ton of yummy mix-ins to add our own flavor profiles to the bark, and an array of caramel fillings for the bonbons. I added dried pineapple, candied pecans, Hawaiian sea salt and passion fruit seeds to my bark, which turned out SO delicious. For the bonbons, I added a few different fillings including salted caramel, coconut caramel, cranberry and peanut butter cup for some variety. The peanut butter cup was my favorite. I had no idea chocolate-making was so involved and tedious, but the end result is pretty sweet.
If hand-feeding chocolate to your lover somehow isn’t your idea of a good time, head over to (what I consider to be) The Most Romantic Restaurant In San Diego, BO-Beau Kitchen + Bar in Ocean Beach. From the gate of “love locks” at the entrance, to the seemingly endless number of white candles burning to create the perfect mood lighting, to the cozy fireplace on the back patio—they nailed the romantic atmosphere at this charming French restaurant. Oh, and then there’s the food. They’re known for their Brussels sprouts, so don’t skip the appetizer course here. The mac & cheese with lobster is rich and divine. The steak frites is done just right (I like it au poivre), and is one of my most favorite meals. The moules (mussels) and frites are amazing, too.
Let the romance begin! xoxo
