Thanksgiving is the busiest day of the year at Hotel del Coronado, which proves that many people feel the same way I do about slaving over an oven all day to cook a feast. This year I decided to order Thanksgiving takeout so mom and I can eat at home in pajamas with plentiful wine and movies. I also did the Father Joe’s Villages Thanksgiving Day 5K run through Balboa Park this morning to alleviate some of the guilt associated with eating the pumpkin pie I’m about to make.
Speaking of Hotel Del, I recently did a Painting by the Sea class on the lawn overlooking Del Beach and it was SO much fun! Wine is included, as well as canvas, paint, artist instruction, parking, and an apron you get to take home with your artwork. Our class painted the iconic Victorian Building spire, which was a lot harder than I thought it would be. I think I’m better with abstract art because there’s more room for error 😉 This was very architectural and involved a lot of shading/lighting elements, but everyone’s painting turned out great. I’m not a skilled artist, but I love the creative process of making something with my own hands. And the wine helps. It’s also nice that you don’t have to do any set-up or clean-up, and they have lots of folks to help with refilling wine and paint, and getting you caught up when you accidentally talk to a friend for 15 minutes and get super far behind the rest of the class. The finished product now hangs proudly in my bathroom (I also have a “van Gogh” creation in my living room from a Wine & Canvas class).
After the class, my friends and I grabbed wood-fired pizza and salads at Eno Pizzeria & Wine Bar over a bottle of wine. My favorite pizzas were the margherita and the fig + pancetta, but we really enjoyed the meatball trio, cheese + salumi board, Eno salad and charred Brussels sprouts, too. They have an extensive wine list, craft beer, killer ocean view, and I personally love the fire pits in the outdoor patio area. Starting today, Skating by the Sea will take over the lawn in front of the restaurant with an ice skating rink – but that’s a whole separate blog post. The next Painting by the Sea class is on Dec. 19 and the art subject is said ice rink.
In the spirit of Thanksgiving, I’m grateful for: family, friends, my health, a job I love, the city I call home, and the extraordinary life I’ve built for myself. And I’m so thankful that my mom is here to celebrate the holiday with me.
